One of the hardiest species of Cyrtomium, Holly Fern has 1½’ to 2½’ erect, dull-green, semi-evergreen fronds. The rhizome is erect and non-creeping. Plants require good drainage and a shaded rich soil.  Similar to other ferns, these should be planted in a shaded woodsy site, ideally planted with perennials that have contrasting foliage textures and colors. Excess winter soil moisture should be a concern, so the plants don’t rot in throughout winter. This species is native to Japan, Korea, and China.

One of the showiest of our native ferns, Maidenhair Fern has soft-green palmate fronds with glossy black stems. It grows 1-2' tall and performs best in the woodland garden but is also great for shaded hillsides, streams edge, or in water garden plantings. It does require a humus-rich soil that is consistently moist (such as with an automatic irrigation system) in order to survive. It is more than worth the effort to grow this choice fern!

Ostrich Fern is a deciduous fern with olive-green foliage that grows to 60" tall in ideal situations. This deciduous selection grows to about 36" tall with a slightly narrower spread.

This beauty has deep green fronds covered with masses of black scales on their undersides. Grows to 16" tall in well-drained soil and part to full shade. We have seen this plant listed as hardy anywhere from Zone 4 to only Zone 6. We have overwintered it in our nursery and display gardens without any problems. A very nice mostly evergreen fern.

Fern, Silver Cloak

Silver Cloak sports a very unusual frond color as the above side of the fronds are dark green, while the undersides are a stunning bright white! Some of the fronds will have a spot of white on their tips. This fern belongs to a group of native ferns which are naturally more drought tolerant than others. These require well-drained soils with added limestone in a part to full shade site. Roots should be shaded to protect from excessive drying out. Plant in an area that will receive minimal moisture over the growing season. Grows 4-6" and is a deciduous short creeping fern. A unique addition to your shade garden!

This is a beautiful, evergreen fern species native to Japan and China. It produces ornamental, heavily textured, dark green fronds. These will grow to 24" in a shady, moist garden site. The soil should be loose and rich - amended with humus. Some references list this as Zone 6, but we have successfully grown these in a semi-protected area in our Zone 5(b) nursery.

This perennial is a hybrid, evergreen selection of our native Strawberry. ‘Pink Panda’ has nice pink blooms with yellow centers. It grows 6-10" in a sunny, well-drained site. This selection is a great trailing plant for ground cover uses, containers, and borders. A word of caution, like most strawberries it is a vigorous spreader in the garden.
