This is a beautiful hybrid selection of our U.S. native sneezeweed. The dark brown flower centers are surrounded by yellow petals that are splashed with orange-red creating a festival of color from June until late summer. It grows to 36" tall and grows best in full sun and moist soils. Best if used in the back of the border as its’ foliage is average at best.

Helenium ‘Moerheim Beauty’
A very popular cultivar with rustic-red flowers splashed with yellow and orange. Sturdy stems make this a great cut flower, but it also holds up well in the garden while attracting butterflies. It is a late season bloomer that grows to 36".

This dwarf cultivar has more of a prostrate habit, growing just 6-9" tall. Long blooming bright orange flowers have a deep red center eye. A long-blooming, compact, evergreen shrub with large leaves 'Dazzler' will certainly take the show with its single, magenta-red, wild rose-like flowers. The centers of the flowers are yellow and the flowers can be seen mid spring to mid summer, and again in the fall if deadheaded. This plant does not have any major pest or disease problems, but will certainly perform best away from wet or poorly drained soil. Drought tolerant. It grows to 9-12" tall.

This is a relatively new strain of Hellebores introduced from hellebore breeder David Culp. Recognized as a superior seed strain, these plants boast flower colors in shades of reds, pinks, apricots and picotees. There are various flower forms including some doubles and some anemone types. Growing to 12-18", these are tough evergreen sun to shade loving perennials. They require a woodland type soil or at least soils amended with some type of organic matter or humus. These are some of the first hardy perennials to bloom in the early spring, often when there is still snow on the ground. Get out early to see them. Removing some of the older rough looking foliage will make the plants look a little cleaner. One of the better deer resistant perennials. Good in dry shade or moist shade.

This introduction from Briggs Nursery is a collection of Helleborus x hybridus seedlings that has been developed extensively by plantsman John Elsley. This strain is prized for its' extended bloom time as the plants often bloom from February into May. The drooping flowers bloom in shades of white, green, pink, red, and purple. The plants exhibit excellent vigor and have exceptional foliage. Mature size is 24" tall by 24" wide. Helleborus x hybridus was voted the 2005 Perennial Plant of the Year by the PPA!

Helleborus x hybridus 'Pine Knot Select'

These are beautiful selections from the Hellebore breeders at Pine Knot Farms. Bloom colors range from white, mauve, green, pink, to lavender. The flowers are about 3" in diameter and appear from January to April. Mature height will be about 15-18". Culturally plants require a part-sun to shady area with rich, moist, cool soils. The tough dark green foliage is evergreen and usually looks good all year. Plants are deer resistant. Make sure to get out into the garden early enough to see these in full bloom!

This beauty has compact, velvety-green foliage with deep red venation and silver highlights. There is so much red and silver coloration, that is looks like the leaves are edged in green. This edge turns orange as the seasons progress to cooler temperatures. The foliage forms a neat mound that grows 8-10" tall and 16" wide. Flowers bloom in summer on 12-15" stalks, but are insignificant compared to the foliage.

Another new Heuchera from Terra Nova Nursery introduced and bred for its larger flowers and green foliage that boasts a silvery-white patina. A flower show  starts in spring and continues sporadically with deadheading through summer. Great for use in containers. Prefers full to part sun and average soil moisture. Heuchera sanguinea ‘Splendens’

This is still a good choice even with all of the newer cultivars. ‘Splendens’ has scarlet blooms on 18-24" wiry stems in Early to Mid-season. The flowers appear over very nice mounds of green foliage. Grows great in borders or along paths in the part-shade garden in a well-drained soil. Also great for bringing hummingbirds to the garden.

Heuchera ‘Silver Scrolls’ (PP12066)

This excellent Heuchera is sure to be an eye catcher in the garden center! ‘Silver Scrolls’ has bronze, silver, and maroon foliage whose color intensity changes with varying light levels. The white flowers open from pink buds. This selection would be an excellent choice at borders edge or in the part shade garden. It grows to 24" in flower.

Heuchera 'Southern Comfort'

Having some Heuchera villosa parentage, 'Southern Comfort' was bred to perform well in more humid southern climates. The leaves can be up to 6-8" large and they change color throughout the season from cinnamon to copper to amber. Creamy white flowers are produced in late summer. Foliage to 14", flowers to 22".

Heuchera ‘Stormy Seas’

This little Heuchera has ruffled foliage in shades of pewter, burgundy, and olive. Reaching only 9" tall this plant is ideal for edging in the border or for containers. White flowers are held aloft slender spikes which occur in the spring.

Heuchera ‘Velvet Night’

Very deep purple leaves of this heuchera look mysterious and inviting and they are actually soft to the touch! The lush foliage mound grows just 7" tall by 17" wide so it’s great to use as a border or an accent. The unique color lasts through the winter. Flowers bloom in early summer, but are insignificant compared to the foliage. Plants are fairly drought tolerant and prefer part shade.

Heuchera villosa ‘Autumn Bride’

A standout in the perennial garden, this robust grower boasts stalks of white, bell-shaped flowers from September through frost. Large pale green leaves are soft and fuzzy to the touch. This easy to grow plant prefers bright shade and drier soils and grows up to 2’ with a mounding habit. It makes a great groundcover or accent plant, and the flowers are also nice for cutting.

A new vigorous selection of the late blooming Heuchera villosa that has been selected for its unique foliage. 'Brownies' is the largest of the villosa types, forming large mounds from chocolate colored leaves with purple-red undersides that peak out a bit. The flowers are white and insignificant. The foliage will grow to 16" tall with the flower scapes reaching 24-30". Blooms in mid-summer. Plants exhibit good heat tolerance.

Bred and developed for its unusual foliage, 'Caramel' has apricot new growth that fades to amber in summer. Creamy-white flowers are produced in late summer on 18" tall stems. Foliage grows to 12" and turns a beautiful salmon-red in the fall. Plants grow best in full to part sun and perform well even under trees in dry shade. Prefers average well-drained soils especially in winter. Makes a great edging or front or the border perennial where its foliage can be seen up close. Watch for frost heaving over winter in the garden; clumps can be reset if they heave.

Wow! This bright chartreuse foliage is a real head turner, but it's not just pretty for a little while. A sport of H. ‘Caramel’ it is also a strong, hearty grower. It performs well in heat and humidity. Habit forms a tidy compact mound that grows 12" tall. Flowers are creamy white and bloom in mid summer on 14" flower scapes. Plants prefer full to part shade, but heavier shade will produce a slightly more green appearance.

Heuchera villosa f. purpurea ‘Bronze Wave’

Sturdy deep-bronze foliage is a show-off in the shade, especially when paired with deep greens of hosta or bright oranges and yellows of other Heuchera. It is a late flowering Heuchera, showing color in September and October with creamy-white flowers. It is drought tolerant and performs well in tough sites. Foliage grow 18" tall or larger and flowers grow to 30".

The long lasting shell pink flowers of Foamy Bells give an airy transparent feel to the part-shade garden. This is a unique cross between Heuchera and Tiarella with the hybrid having Tiarella like (light green and brown) foliage and Heuchera like flowers. It reaches 18" when in flower and the blooms begin in Early season and last at least 8 weeks or more, especially if deadheaded. The cultural requirements are similar to its parents, requiring part-shade and well-drained soil. This plant has some of the prettiest flowers we grow! A Blooms of Bressingham introduction.

‘Viking Ship’ is a great cultivar having both exceptional foliage and floral characteristics. In spring the maple-like leaves have a silvery edge which brightens up the foliage. This variety is quite adaptable growing in sun to shade conditions. It can be used like other foamy bells as an edging, border, or massing perennial.

Hosta
Hosta   (Zone 3)
Hostas, as you probably already know, are excellent perennials for the shade border. They are primarily grown for their foliage effect yet many have beautiful, sometimes fragrant flowers in Mid to Late-season that attract hummingbirds like crazy in our greenhouses. Hostas are easy to grow in light shade and moist soils. We recommend the most environmentally friendly slug bait of your choice to best enjoy a Hosta garden.

‘Abiqua Drinking Gourd’ - This cultivar has very distinctive foliage! The unusual blue-green foliage is deeply cupped upward and has a heavily corrugated texture. White blooms are produced on 2’ flower scapes in late June. Mature plant size is 16" tall by 36" wide with an open mounded habit. Every shade garden should have one!

'Allegan Fog' - An interesting Hosta with shiny dark green leaves and white centers that are flecked with green. The flecking creates a "fog" look to the leaf. The white centers will green up as they mature throughout the season. Foliage mound will grow to 16", with the lavender flower scapes reaching 22" in mid-summer. Plant in part-shade to shade with a moist, rich, organic soil.

‘Big Daddy’  - Large, corrugated, blue-green leaves form an impressive mound of foliage. Thick leaves show good slug resistance. White flowers bloom on 30" scapes. Mound grows 25" tall and can spread up to 46" wide. Nice to use as a background plant to set off other colors in the shade garden.

‘Blue Mammoth’ -This popular variety is very highly rated! The deep bluish-green leaves are heavily textured AND slug resistant! As its’ name suggests this plant is big! Leaf size can be 15" long by 11" wide. Mature plant size can reach 30" tall by 60" wide. Near-white flowers are produced on 32" scapes in mid-June. Like most hostas, plant in part to full shade in average woodland type soils with high organic matter.

'Blue Mouse Ears' - Voted the 2008 Hosta of the Year by the American Hosta Growers Association, this distinctive small hosta bears a handsome clump of small blue-green, heart-shaped leaves of thick substance that resist slugs. It is an adorable dwarf hosta with small spikes of lilac flowers on 12" scapes that bloom in summer. Plants have a slow growth rate but are very much worth the wait! An excellent hosta small spaces or rock gardens!

‘Diana Remembered’ - This is a sport of ‘Seventh Heaven’ that is named after the late Diana, Princess of Wales. Blue-green leaves have a creamy-white margins that extends down the leaf petiole. 'Great Expectations' - An award winning hosta, this variety is gaining popularity. Very large, almost round leaves reach 12" long and 10" wide. White flowers bloom on 30" flower scapes in early to mid summer.

‘Guacamole’ – Voted the 2002 American Hosta Growers Association Hosta of the Year! This rapid grower has rounded green leaves with a gold center. The foliage colors are more intense with more light. ‘Halcyon’
One of the many great tardiana selections, ‘Halcyon’ has thick, blue, heart-shaped leaves that exhibit good slug resistance (ok, by comparison to other hosta!). Plants grow 21" high by 24" wide with nice violet flowers in Mid-season. Our favorite medium sized blue hosta!

‘Inniswood’ - From our very own Inniswood Metro Park in Columbus, Ohio comes this wonderful hosta! Heavily-textured bright-gold leaves are edged in green and display wonderful puckering. Pale lavender flowers appear in summer on 30" scapes. This medium-large sized hosta grows approximately 2’ tall and 4’ wide at maturity.

‘June’ The 2001 American Hosta Growers Association Hosta of the Year! This is a gold centered sport of the excellent H. ‘Halcyon’ that has heavy substance and exhibits good slug resistance. 'Night Before Christmas' - Probably the best of the white centered hosta cultivars, ‘Night Before Christmas’ is an easy to grow selection that should replace the undulata types. It has a bright white non-fading center and a wide dark green margin. The clump grows to 26" tall and 50" wide at maturity. It has pale lavender flowers on 42" scapes in mid-season.

'Olive Bailey Langdon' - Finally a suitable substitute for ‘Frances Williams’! If you are tired of the leaf scorch that ‘Frances Williams’ is prone to, this is the selection is for you. It features beautiful, rounded, blue-green leaves with a gold margin. The clump grows to 31" tall and 55" wide at maturity. It has near-white flowers on 30" scapes in mid-season.

‘Paradigm’ - The 2007 American Hosta Growers Association Hosta of the Year! Wonderfully colored gold leaves are edged with a wide blue-green margin. ‘Paul’s Glory’ - Selected as the 1999 American Hosta Growers Association Hosta of the Year, ‘Paul’s Glory’ has heart-shaped gold leaves with a blue-green streaked margin. Leaf centers fade to white by midseason. Lavender flowers are produced on 35" scapes in summer. Mature plants may reach 25" tall by 48" wide.

‘Praying Hands’ - Most definitely for the collector’s garden! This unique hosta looks exactly like its’ name suggests. Long narrow leaves are edged very subtly with a thin white margin and prominent veins. Each leaf comes together midway up the leaf to form praying hands. Grows to approximately 2’ tall at maturity.

‘Remember Me’ - This sport of ‘June’ was introduced by Walter’s Gardens. Yellow leaves emerge with a dark blue-green margin. As the season progresses the leaf center turns to near white. Lavender flowers appear in summer. Plants grow to 18" tall. Our plants are purchased from Walter’s Gardens, who donates $.25 from each plant sold to the Grand Rapids affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.

‘Revolution’
– A revolutionary hosta with dark green foliage with a cream colored center. The cream colored center is speckled with various shades of green. The foliage has good substance so it should exhibit good slug resistance. ‘Revolution’ has light lavender flowers in late summer on 20” scapes. The clump grows to 18” high by about the same width.

'Striptease’ - Voted the 2005 American Hosta Growers Association Hosta of the Year! This sport of ‘Gold Standard’ exhibits exceptional foliar qualities. The name refers to the white strip that appears between the gold center and wide dark green edge of the leaves. Mature plants reach 20" tall by 40" wide. Pale lavender flowers on 20-30" scapes bloom in late summer. It is certainly one of the most unique and distinctive hostas on the market and is an excellent specimen for the shady perennial garden.

‘Sum and Substance’ Huge comes to mind when I think of this hosta! Very large chartreuse-gold leaves form a clump 36" high and 60" wide. The leaves are waxy and have good slug resistance. The leaves have a very wide blue-green margin and a narrow center that is creamy-white. This one will definitely get the conversation started! A medium sized hosta that grows approximately 28" tall. ‘Wheaton Blue’ - This is a great hosta with clear blue-green foliage. Its mounding form adds excellent texture to the shade garden. At maturity, plants reach 26" tall by 50" wide. The leaves grow 10" long by 7" wide, so it makes a nice bold statement in the landscape!

‘Wide Brim’ A very strong grower with medium green leaves and a wide cream colored margin. Flowers are lavender and appear in late July on 36" scapes. Its compact habit (20" tall) and bright coloration make this an excellent multi-use hosta. A Paul Aden introduction.

‘Wolverine’ - We decided to pick this one up for all of our wonderful customers up north – as well as those those right here in Columbus that want to put it in the garden near the ‘Buckeye Blue’ and other Buckeye cultivars! It truly is a great plant – name aside. Long lance-shaped leaves are blue-gray in the center and edged in gold. A fast growing variety with a nice flowing shape in the garden. Plants grow to 1½’ tall and about 3’ wide at maturity.

Humulus lupulus 'Aureus'
Golden Hops Vine  (Zone 4)
What else could make the Hops vine more ornamental – how about bright golden foliage! The vibrant golden foliage sets this vine apart from others in the garden. Both male and female plants are in cultivation. The female plants bear insignificant papery pale-green flowers in summer that give way to the fruit (hops) that can be used in brewing or for decoration. However, the male plants are more widely grown as it has been cultivated for longer. Both plants grow quickly and can grow up to 20’ in one year. Plant in full sun for best gold color.

Hydrangea 'Limelight'
Hydrangea  (Zone 4)
Chartreuse-lime flowers begin to bloom in early to midsummer on this large hydrangea. Once the flowers are mature they turn white and continue to develop into beautiful shades of light to dark pink. Medium green leaves turns to beautiful shades of red and yellows with the first snap of really cool fall weather. Plants prefer full sun to light shade and once established plants will tolerate heat, humidity, and poor soils. At maturity plants can grow up to 6-8' tall with an equal spread.

Hypericum calycinum
St. John’s Wort  (Zone 5)
This perennial produces 2-3" yellow blooms in mid-summer. The yellow flowers stand up well against the dark green lustrous foliage. Foliage is small and round to oblong and is relatively free of pests and diseases. This species requires moist soil and a partially shaded location. It looks especially good in front of rock walls in a mass planting. There is a beautiful massing of this at Longwood Gardens. This makes a great 18" tall vigorous groundcover, spreading rapidly by underground stems.
