We are excited to be growing this U.S. native pachysandra! It is an interesting and underused groundcover with large, rounded, slightly mottled leaves that are lobed toward the tip. Leaves have more of a matte finish, not glossy like the Pachysandra terminalis. It is very slow growing and clump forming. White flowers with a flush of pink, bloom just below the foliage in spring. They perform best in part shade and can tolerate dry soil. They grow 9-12".

This easy to grow perennial has clouds of lavender flowers in Mid through Late-season atop fragrant silver foliage that reaches 36-48" tall with a similar sprawl. Russian Sage is drought tolerant and should be grown in full sun. It is very useful as a filler in the border or as a mass planting on tough commercial sites. This great Phlox is a selection of one of our native phlox species. The smooth phlox is an outstanding stoloniferous species with bright rosy-pink flowers. ‘Anita Kistler' produces bright pink flowers in Mid-season. The attractive foliage is quite glossy and smooth stemmed. This cultivar grows to 18" in sun to part-shade. It is tolerant of heat and humidity, which makes it more adaptable to southern gardens. An excellent selection for its clean foliage and bright pink cheery flowers.

Phlox paniculata
Garden Phlox  (Zone 4)
Garden phlox is a classic indispensable perennial that every garden should have! These wonderful plants are known for their long Mid to Late-season bloom period. Their flowers are very fragrant and are great for cutting. Most varieties are tall, growing between 2' to 6’, which makes them a great choice for the back of the perennial border. They require a full sun site and average well-drained garden soil for good performance. Occasionally some garden phlox cultivars will develop powdery mildew. A full sun site, good air movement, and morning watering, will help prevent mildew from developing.  For 2007 we offer the following cultivars of the Eastern U.S. native Phlox paniculata:

Phlox 'Ping Pong'
Phlox Hybrid  (Zone 5)
This cultivar is a cross between P. paniculata and P. divaricata and takes the best qualities from each. Large P. paniculata-like flowers are light-pink with red eyes and bloom late spring through summer. The dark green foliage has good mildew resistance taken from P. divaricata. It grows 18-22" and performs best in full sun to part shade with well-drained soil.

Phlox stolonifera ‘Home Fires’
Woodland Creeping Phlox  (Zone 4)
A selection of the 1990 Perennial Plant Association Plant of the Year, this woodland creeping phlox is a tough, hardy native perennial species that spreads by underground stolons to form nice dense colonies. This selection produces loads of deep pink flowers that last for several weeks on 8-10" plants. An excellent shade tolerant, spring-blooming groundcover that performs best in a consistently moist soil.

A must for every garden! This outstanding, mat-forming groundcover bursts open with vibrant, intense blooms in early May. The semi-evergreen foliage grows to 4-6". Plant in full sun or part-shade and well-drained soils. Great when used on slopes or as an edging in the front of the border!

Its’ pure white flowers appear in mid to late-season and will attract hummingbirds to the garden. Easy to grow in full sun or part-shade in moist but well-drained soils.

This Blooms of Bressingham introduction was selected for its excellent variegated foliage! The fern-like foliage is creamy-yellow and dark green, providing an excellent textural contrast in the garden. The blue flowers in Early to Mid-season are an added bonus. Grows to 24" tall in flower and should be treated culturally much like a hardy fern. Grow in part to full shade and a moist well-drained soil. Don’t plant in full sun or failure will soon follow.

Finally, a variegated form of our native Eastern U.S. Jacob's Ladder! Green leaves are edged in white that is periodically tinged with a soft pink. Traditional blue flowers bloom from May until July. When in flower the plant is approximately 20" tall. An excellent choice for the sunny border in a moist but well-drained soil.

Polygonum aubertii
Silver Lace Vine  (Zone 5)
An aggressive twining vine that, placed properly, makes an excellent screen or fence covering. Clusters of fragrant white flowers appear in Mid-season and can nearly cover this 20-30' grower. Very easy to grow in full sun (or light shade) and average garden soil. Do not use in a small garden area or around doors, or you will be fighting your way through this monster in no time at all! If used properly it is a very functional plant.

Potentilla megalantha
Wooly Cinquefoil  (Zone 2)
Another warm and fuzzy plant. Silvery foliage is soft and velvety. It forms a nice, well behaved mound that in early summer is colored with large bright yellow flowers. It likes full sun to part shade and grows 6-12" tall with a spread of 10-12". A nice border plant that could possibly be a substitute for Artemisia ‘Silver Mound’ or Stachys.

Pulmonaria 'Dark Vader' (PP12333)

Silver speckles cover the beautiful dark green leaves of this new hybrid. ‘Dark Vader’ is a vigorous clump forming perennial that produces sprays of blue-purple and pink flowers in early spring. This strong, mildew resistant plant performs best in part shade and grows to about 10-12".

Pulmonaria longifolia ‘E. B. Anderson’
Lungwort  (Zone 3)
This selection is synonymous with ‘Bertram Anderson' in the trade. Pulmonarias are a relatively underused and under appreciated Genus of perennials. The foliage is one of the main selling points. The leaves of 'E. B. Anderson' are long and narrow with silvery-white spots mottling the foliage. The clump grows to 12" tall. There are occasionally cultural problems with botrytis and powdery mildew if the air circulation and light levels are not ample enough. Careful watering, morning sun, consistently moist soil, and part-shade in the afternoon will benefit these greatly.

Pulmonaria ‘Raspberry Splash’ (PP12138)

This premium selection is unique in that it has wonderful raspberry red flowers instead of the more typical blues and pinks. The foliage is somewhat upright growing with the typical silver spotting. It grows to about 12" tall and prefers a partially shaded location and consistent soil moisture. This is a unique selection well worth trying!

Pulmonaria ‘Roy Davidson’

This cultivar is a hybrid between Pulmonaria longifolia (long-leafed lungwort) and P. saccharata (Bethlehem Sage). This selection has the long, narrow foliage of the P. longifolia types, with the striking white spottiness of P. saccharata. ‘Roy Davidson' will grow to 12" and produces lovely, pale blue flowers. The main selling point for this cultivar is that it is reputed to be more heat tolerant than other pulmonarias, which would extend its growing range further into the south. This has the same Early-season bloom time and cultural requirements as other Pulmonarias.

Pulsatilla vulgaris

An excellent plant for Early-season interest in the garden! The silvery-green foliage appears in late winter and is quickly followed by wine-colored flowers even before the foliage has completely emerged. The flowers are then followed by silky seed heads that persist into summer. Excellent along paths or in the rock garden, Common Pasque Flower grows to about 18" tall (in flower) in full sun, and extremely well-drained soils.

The single red flowers of this Pulsatilla are sure to add some heat to the spring garden! Plants only reach 12" tall, so place toward the front or the border. The soft texture and feathery seed heads also add interest well after the blooms are gone. Good drainage is a must for optimal growth.
