Ornamental Raspberry (Zone 6)
An excellent groundcover to use in full sun to part shade, this plant is a fast grower, but won’t take over your garden. Round leaves have a crinkled appearance and a coarse texture with hairy stems that send out roots from each node. Small white flowers bloom in late spring, and then yellow berries form. Great red fall color and fairly pest free. Grows 6-8" tall.

Rudbeckia fulgida var. fulgida
Black-eyed Daisy  (Zone 5)
This is a wonderful plant! It is similar to 'Goldsturm', but with a finer texture. The flowers are about half the size of 'Goldsturm' and they are plentiful!! The foliage is smaller and more oval, and is a lighter green color. This selection has an extended bloom time and starts blooming later than other Rudbeckias. It grows 24-30" tall. It makes a good cut flower, and is great for the middle or back of the border. It requires full sun to part shade and average soils.

Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm’

‘Goldsturm’ is a widely used cultivar of our southeastern U.S. native Rudbeckia fulgida. ‘Goldsturm’ was originally bred in Germany in the late 1930’s and selected for its free flowering more compact habit than the species. It will grow to 18-24" and blooms in Mid to Late-season. The golden, daisy-like flowers are 3-4" wide and last for months in the summer. Deadheading old blooms will encourage continual flower production. These perform admirably in a full sun site with rich, well-worked soil. The dark green foliage contrasts well with the gold flowers. Ideally these should be vegetatively propagated, seed propagated forms may exhibit a wide range of variation in form and height. This wonderful long blooming perennial was voted the Plant of the Year in 1999 by the Perennial Plant Association.

This cultivar is an outstanding coneflower selection of one of our native Rudbeckias. Allan Armitage, the perennial guru, refers to this plant as "one of the finest coneflowers in cultivation." This produces large flowers with long, drooping, yellow petals and a center green cone. It blooms in Mid to Late-season, producing many 3-4" flowers on top of 5-8’ plants. The height of this perennial lends itself well to framing in the back of the border or just as a great backdrop for the garden. Its’ dark green, coarse foliage contrasts well with the bright yellow blooms. For best garden performance, plant in a full sun site, with rich, well-drained garden soil. Salvia lyrata ‘Purple Volcano’

Very deep reddish-purple foliage has a hint of green on the tops of the large, crinkled leaves. On the undersides, foliage is a lighter reddish-pink that makes it look like it is lit from underneath. Colors intensify and deepen in the fall. Small blue flowers form on 12" tall spikes in June and July. This plant has a great color and texture to use with bright greens or reds. Nice in the garden, but does just as well in containers. Prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Foliage grows 4" tall and large leaves spread out to about 12".

Gray-green leaves have a rosy edge on this multi-season interest plant. ‘Matrona’ is similar to ‘Autumn Joy’ but with a kick. The plant flowers earlier than ‘Autumn Joy’ and gets a little taller, reaching up to 24". The rosy foliage gives way to rose colored blooms. These blooms darken to a rich brown in the fall and winter and are sturdy enough to provide structure in the winter garden. This plant prefers average soils and is excellent in the border or in containers. With all of these great qualities it is no wonder it was chosen as the 2000 International Plant of the Year.

Sedum reflexum

This species is a cute little evergreen Sedum. It has spiky, blue-gray leaves that make it look like a type of spruce. This Sedum does not have the fragrance of a spruce, but looking at its dense foliage makes you want to touch it just to see how prickly it is. The leaves are not as sharp, they actually form a cushion that small yellow flowers rest upon in summer. This 8" tall Sedum is a wonderful groundcover in rock gardens, borders, or in containers.

Gorgeous bright yellow-golden needle-like foliage looks similar to an evergreen shrub. Habit is low growing and trailing, which makes it a useful plant in the perennial garden and in containers. This amazing new Sedum cultivar was discovered growing in a group of Sedum ‘Brilliant’ and was selected for its unique, neon pink flowers that appear Mid to Late-season. The bloom color of ‘Neon’ is a more rosy-pink shade than ‘Autumn Joy’ or ‘Brilliant’ although the same type of large flower heads are produced. ‘Neon’ grows to 1½' and performs best in full sun and well-drained soil, especially in winter. Sempervivum arachnoideum ‘Red Cobweb’ NEW!

Pale green compact rosettes are covered with tiny hairs that resemble spider webs. Although it’s name is ‘red cobweb’, neither the plant nor the little webs are red. The blooms, however, are reddish pink. They bloom from a flower stalk that emerges from the rosettes and can grow up to 8" tall. When not in bloom, the plants only reach about 2" tall and are slow to spread. These are great to tuck into rock gardens or to use in troughs. They prefer full sun and well drained soils.

Rather it is plants in the genus Ambrosia (Ragweed) that are the primary culprits causing hay fever. ‘Fireworks’ is a fantastic 3' selection of the native rough-stemmed goldenrod. The large, arching sprays of yellow panicles are displayed in Late-season. This plant can be used as a specimen, accent plant, and the cut flowers are also excellent to use in arrangements. Like other goldenrods, they prefer full sun and average well-drained soil.

Lamb’s Ears is one of those truly unforgettable garden perennials. It is primarily grown and used for its soft, silvery, basal foliage. The purplish flowers, which appear on 18" stems, are commonly removed from the plants as they develop as many people feel they detract from the overall appearance of the plant. The foliage will grow to 8" and likes a full sun site with well-drained soil of moderate fertility. During periods of hot, humid weather foliar diseases may develop leading to open dead patches in the center of the plant. If possible, avoid late day and overhead watering during these periods. A nice plant for edging and borders.

There are several other Stachys species and cultivars with plain green foliage that make wonderful, ornamental landscape plants. ‘Hummelo’ produces very attractive rosy-pink flower spikes that grow to 20". This clump forming selection blooms in Mid-season and has lustrous dark green basal foliage. Plant in a full sun site with well-drained soil of moderate fertility.
