As the name implies, this cultivar has flowers in mixed shades of pink, crimson, and rose. The Early to Mid-season bloom appears atop these 2-3' plants. These plants grow best in a well-drained garden soil with a full sun to part-shade site. These make great border and cutting plants. Tellima ‘Forest Frost’

Similar in appearance to Heuchera, Fringe Cups are native to the pacific Northwest. ‘Forest Frost’ is a deep shade-loving perennial with stunning, quilted foliage. In spring and summer the foliage is green with silver mottling between the veins. In cooler fall weather the foliage becomes burgundy with a silver overlay on top. Chartreuse flowers borne in spring fade to a pretty pink. Mature foliage mound reaches 8" and the flower spikes grow to 28". Plants perform best in cool, moist, organic, woodland type soil. Useful as a massing shade plant and at the front of the border where the small unusual flowers can be most appreciated.

Small, dark-green, glossy leaves grow on the somewhat woody stems of this plant. This compact grower is most commonly used as a low hedge in knot gardens. The tiny lilac-pink blooms almost detract from the foliage. This plant can grow to 12" and needs rich well-drained soil in full sun.

Thalictrum aquilegifolium

What a graceful plant! The light, airy leaves resemble those of a columbine (Aquilegia). The purple blooms, that appear light and airy as well, resemble a cloud wafting above the plant. While this plant is somewhat short-lived it is immensely attractive. Even after the blooms are spent the seed pods continue to provide interest. This plant can grow up to 3' and is heat tolerant but requires a moist, part-shade area.

Japanese native that makes a great background plant with its delicate and airy texture. It reaches 4-6’ tall with sturdy and self-supporting purple stems. Tricyrtis ‘Hayley Cameron’

Honestly, we have had a hard time finding printed information about this plant that we picked up on a PPA tour some years ago. From our own experience it is a great Toad Lily with bluish-purple flowers tinged with white in late season atop strong growing dark green foliage. It grows to 18" tall and makes a nice shade groundcover if planted in a semi-protected site in Zone 5. Remember to display these so that the small orchid-like flowers can be easily enjoyed.

Toad lilies are one of the latest blooming perennials. ‘Miyazaki’ has a lilac flower with dark crimson-purple blotching. Great for the part-shade garden that has moist rich soil. Reaching 2-3’ tall and blooming for and extended period in the fall this plant should be placed near the front of the border so the unusual flowers can be showcased.

A hybrid selection that appears to us to be hardy in zone 5(b) in our test garden. ‘Sinonome' has purple flowers with white spots (speckling) appearing in late summer and lasting into fall. The plants grow to 30" tall and spread by stolons to form a nice size colony in the shade garden. Plant these near a pathway so that the orchid-like flowers can be enjoyed up close!

A unique groundcover for the shade. Leaves are a deep, dark purple edged in green, but the more sun it gets, the more golds and light greens appear. You have a good chance of finding four-leaved clovers with this plant! It likes moist, rich soils and full to part shade. Plants grow 10-12" tall.

Globeflower is an excellent plant for the wet area in your garden or to plant alongside a pond or water bog. 'Golden Queen' has dark green leaves and large 3-4" golden orange flowers in late spring and early summer. The flowers are wonderful for use in fresh flower arrangements. Plants prefer full sun to part shade and are vigorous growers that reach 18-24" tall, 36-42" when in bloom.

This wonderful dwarf introduction has spikes of large, clear, plum-colored flowers held tightly above the foliage. Flowers appear for several months in summer with occasional deadheading. Plants perform best in full sun with sharply draining soil. Mulleins resent wet feet anytime of the year so be careful not to overwater or rotting may occur. Foliage mound grows to 8" and the flower spikes reach 18". Makes a good cut flower. Best planted in a dry sunny border with other summer blooming plants.

An improved selection with iridescent raspberry-peach flowers with a flush of deep raspberry near the center. Unlike many verbascum, this beauty will continue to bloom even if it is not dead-headed! Blooms appear throughout Mid-season atop nice glossy green foliage. Grows to 24” tall in full sun and a well-drained soil. Spider mites can sometimes be a problem so you may have to treat accordingly.

Verbascum phoeniceum ‘Violetta’

This cultivar has unusual vibrant dark purple blooms in mid-summer, which grow from a basal rosette of light green leaves. The drought tolerant plant will grow 2½-3’ and will rebloom if deadheaded. Verbascums require full sun and well-drained soil, especially in winter. ‘Violetta’ is a great plant for attracting butterflies and also to use for cut flowers.

Verbena bonariensis

Very tall, upright, airy textured plant. Lavender blue flowers bloom in 2-4" panicles that sit atop 3-4’ wiry stems. Texture is great to use in the middle of the border where the plants have a backdrop to sit against. Plants can be pruned back to create more branching and a slightly different effect. Full sun and well-drained soils are preferred. Plants are marginally hardy in Zone 6, but are known to reseed themselves.

‘Alba' is a vigorous, white flowering selection that grows to 6" tall. The Mid-season blooms appear atop the shiny, 1-2" long foliage. This 15-18" tall selection shows off its intense deep blue flowers for at least 2-3 weeks in Mid-season. ‘Crater Lake Blue' is a very popular selection with a more prostrate habit than other speedwells. The 1-2" oblong, dark green foliage provides a nice background for the vibrant flowers. Plant in average, well-drained garden soil in a sunny area, perhaps along the edge of a garden path where its spreading habit can be most appreciated.

Growing to only 4-6", this tough plant forms a solid mat of medium green foliage that turns a bronzy-purplish hue with the onset of cooler fall and winter temperatures. Light blue flowers are produced in Mid-season on top of the foliage, which appears to stay at least semi-evergreen (except for the coldest regions of the U.S.). This perennial performs optimally in a full sun, well-drained garden soil.

Native to the Northern U.S. and Greenland, this underused violet sports beautiful, small, purplish-blue flowers, mainly in Early season with sporadic bloom through the summer. The foliage mounds grow to 6" tall an are an attractive deep purple color that complements the flowers quite nicely. This selection spreads by creeping rhizomes and self seeds very heavily to form nice, self-sustaining colonies in the garden. Plant in part-shade to shade and average garden soils.

This groundcover is quite adaptable to a wide range of sites around the garden as it tolerates sun and light shade. Once established, plants even thrive in the very dry conditions found under trees or on a bank. The foliage, which is evergreen and resembles that of strawberries, builds up into a dense carpet. The flowers, in late spring and early summer, are single, bright yellow, and stand out well against the deep green foliage. Grows 6-8" tall and 4-6" wide.
